O primeiro verso de um hino não rimado e acentual, de sete estrofes de quatro linhas cada, designado no Breviário Romano para as Vésperas no Ofício Comum, no Ofício dos Sábados e no Pequeno Ofício (bem como para as Festas) da Santíssima Virgem. Foi atribuído erroneamente a São Bernardo, mas é anterior a ele, sendo encontrado num manuscrito de São Galo do século IX; e também, sem suficiente autoridade, a São Venâncio Fortunato (m. 609). Sua frequente ocorrência no Ofício Divino tornou-o muito popular na Idade Média, sendo muitos outros hinos baseados nele.
The first verse of an unrhymed, accentual hymn, of seven strophes of four lines each, assigned in Roman Breviary to Vespers in the Common office, the Office of Saturdays, and the Little Office (as well as for Feasts) of the Blessed Virgin. It has been ascribed wrongly to St. Bernard, but antedates him, being found in a St. Gall manuscript of the ninth century; and also, without sufficient authority, to St. Venantius Fortunatus (d. 609). Its frequent occurence in the Divine Office made it most popular in the Middle Ages, many other hymns being founded upon it.
