Beato Justino de Jacobis(Blessed Justin de Jacobis)

Vigário Apostólico da Abissínia e Bispo titular de Nilópolis, nasceu em San Fele, Província de Potenza, Itália, em 9 de outubro de 1800 e faleceu em 31 de julho de 1860, na planície de Eydele entre as montanhas Chedene e Hamamo na Abissínia, enquanto se dirigia a Halay, onde esperava recuperar sua saúde. Em 17 de outubro de 1818, entrou na Congregação dos Lazaristas em Nápoles, fez os votos em 18 de outubro de 1820 e foi ordenado sacerdote em Brindisi, em 12 de junho de 1824. Depois de passar algum tempo no cuidado das almas em Oria e Monopoli, tornou-se superior, primeiro em Lecce e depois em Nápoles. Em 1839, foi nomeado primeiro Prefeito Apostólico da Abissínia e encarregado da fundação de missões católicas nesse país. Após trabalhar com grande sucesso na Abissínia por oito anos, foi feito Bispo titular de Nilópolis em 1847 e logo depois Vigário Apostólico da Abissínia, mas recusou a dignidade episcopal até que foi finalmente forçado a aceitá-la em 1849. Apesar de prisões, exílio e toda forma de perseguição por pagãos e hereges, fundou numerosas missões católicas, construiu várias escolas para a formação de um clero nativo e, de muitas outras maneiras, trabalhou pela conversão da Abissínia. O processo de sua beatificação foi iniciado em 13 de julho de 1904.

On 17 October, 1818, he entered the Congregation of the Lazarists at Naples, took vows there on 18 October, 1820, and was ordained priest at Brindisi, 12 June, 1824. After spending some time in the care of souls at Oria and Monopoli, he became superior, first at Lecce, then at Naples. In 1839 he was appointed first Prefect Apostolic of Abyssinia and entrusted with the foundation of Catholic missions in that country. After laboring with great success in Abyssinia for eight years, he was made titular Bishop of Nilopolis in 1847, and shortly afterwards Vicar Apostolic of Abyssinia, but he refused the episcopal dignity until it was finally forced upon him in 1849. Despite imprisonment, exile, and every other kind of persecution from heathens and heretics, he founded numerous Catholic missions, built various schools for the training of a native clergy, and in many other ways labored for the conversion of Abyssinia. The process of his beatification was introduced on 13 July, 1904.
