Nasceu em 6 de novembro de 1657, em Três Rios, Canadá; faleceu em 25 de janeiro de 1736. Foi o primeiro canadense a ingressar nos Recoletos dos Frades Menores. Seu pai, Pierre Denis de la Ronde, e sua mãe, Catherine Leneuf de la Poterie, eram nativos da Normandia. Em 1669, ingressou no seminário de Quebec e em 9 de maio de 1677, entrou para os Recoletos na mesma cidade, recebendo o nome de José na vida religiosa. Quando fez a profissão religiosa, foi para a França estudar teologia. Após ser ordenado, retornou ao Canadá em 1682, onde em 1685, completou a instalação dos Recoletos na Ilha Percée. Fundou a casa da ordem em Placentia em 1689 e aquela em Montreal em 1692. Após exercer o ofício de comissário provincial, superior do convento de Quebec e mestre de noviços, foi nomeado, em 1709, superior dos Recoletos e pároco de Três Rios, onde reconstruiu em pedra a antiga igreja. Em 1719, levou à França, para ser enviado a Roma, os Atos do Irmão Didace (Les actes du tres-religieux Frere Didace), um Recoleto canadense de quem foi confessor durante muitos anos. Faleceu logo após seu retorno à Nova França.
Born 6 November, 1657, at Three Rivers, Canada; died 25 January, 1736. He was the first Canadian to join the Recollects of the Friars Minor. His father, Pierre Denis de la Ronde and his mother Catherine Leneuf de la Poterie, were natives of Normandy. In 1669 he entered the seminary at Quebec and on 9 May, 1677, joined the Recollects in the same city, taking in religion the name of Joseph. When professed he went to France to study theology. After being ordained he returned to Canada in 1682, where in 1685, he completed the installation of the Recollects at Ile Percée. He founded the house of the order at Plaisance in 1689 and that at Montreal in 1692. After holding the office of provincial commissary, superior of the convent of Quebec, and master of novices, he was named, in 1709, superior of the Recollects and parish priest of Three Rivers, where he rebuilt in stone the old church. In 1719 he carried to France, to be forwarded to Rome, the Acts of Brother Didace (Les actes du tres-religieux Frere Didace), a Canadian Recollect whose confessor he was for many years. He died shortly after his return to New France.
