Uma cadeira de pedra ou mármore semicircular; um recesso retangular ou semicircular; o pórtico da palæstra grega, ou ginásio, onde eram realizadas disputações entre os eruditos na antiguidade; também, em casas particulares, o parastas, ou vestíbulo, utilizado para conversação. O termo às vezes é aplicado a um alpendre ou capela que se projeta de um edifício maior. Também é usado, como sinônimo de cátedra, para um trono ou assento de qualquer tipo; para um pequeno quarto privado; o espaço entre uma janela saliente e as pequenas capelas entre os contrafortes de uma grande igreja ou catedral.
A semicircular stone or marble seat; a rectangular or semicircular recess; the portico of the Grecian palæstra, or gymnasium, in which disputations of the learned were held among the ancients; also, in private houses, the parastas, or vestibule, used for conversation. The term is sometimes applied to a porch or chapel which projects from a larger building. Also used, as synonymous with cathedra, for a throne or seat of any kind; for a small private chamber; the space between an oriel window and the small chapels between the buttresses of a large church or cathedral.
