Em 2 de janeiro de 1882, o então vigário apostólico de Shan-tung, o R. Rev. Monsenhor D. Cosi, elegeu como pró-vigário apostólico para a parte sul de seu vicariato o Padre João Baptista Anzer, membro do Seminário de Steyl. O Padre Anzer, junto com outro missionário do mesmo seminário, foi para esta parte da missão, onde a religião católica havia sido pouco pregada antes. Mais tarde, outros missionários da mesma sociedade foram enviados, e em 1886 o Vicariato Apostólico do Sul de Shan-tung foi erigido. Em 1898, os quatro distritos civis de Kiao-Chau, Tsi-Me, Kau-Mi e Chu-chong, pertencentes ao Governo Alemão, foram acrescentados. O clima é temperado, e há 12.000.000 habitantes. Ele reside em Yen-Chu-Fu. Em 1904, a missão contava com: 37 sacerdotes europeus; 11 sacerdotes nativos; 26.300 católicos; 40.400 catecúmenos; e 130 igrejas e capelas. Em 1908, havia: 46 sacerdotes europeus; 12 sacerdotes nativos; 35.301 católicos; 39.838 catecúmenos; 131 igrejas e capelas; 1 seminário, com 6 alunos; 1 seminário preparatório, com 50 alunos; 8 escolas sino-alemãs, com 323 alunos; 107 escolas para catecúmenos, com 1.384 alunos; 2 escolas para catequistas, com 194 alunos; 33 escolas chinesas, com 350 alunos; 1 colégio para meninas europeias, com 51 alunas; 2 asilos para homens idosos, com 68 internos; 1 hospital; 6 orfanatos, com 428 órfãos; 3 Irmãos Marianistas; 12 irmãs das Missionárias Franciscanas de Maria; 6 Servas do Espírito Santo.
On 2 Jan., 1882, the then vicar Apostolic of Shan-tung, Rt. Rev. Mgr. D.
