A sé titular da Armênia. A cidade estava situada em Asthianene ou Balabitene, uma região entre Masius e Anti-Taurus, ao norte de Commagene e Mesopotâmia. Justiniano construiu um castelo lá, onde estacionou uma guarnição sob o comando de um duque. Ele também a incluiu na província, Armênia Quarta, que acabara de formar. Em 613, Citharizum foi tomada por Ashot, um general do rei persa, Cosroes II. Nos registros do Concílio Trulano (692), encontramos o nome de Marianus, Bispo de Kitharizon (ou Kithariza), pois o nome parece ter sido indeclinável (Lequien, I, 453). Nenhum outro bispo é conhecido. A cidade é mencionada em Parthey, "Notitia Prima", por volta de 840 como pertencente à Armênia Quarta, sob a metrópole de Melitene. Ela é identificada com a moderna aldeia Keterig.
